LAWRENCE COUNTY, ALABAMA, Ala — Sheriff Max Sanders confirmed on Sunday that a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a shooting while on duty that resulted in the death of Marty Hutto on Saturday, August 6, 2022.
The Deputy initiated a traffic stop on Mr. Hutto’s vehicle around 9:15 PM on August 6, 2022, at or near the intersection of County Road 217 and County Road 214 due to a traffic violation. Mr. Hutto had outstanding warrants for his arrest for Domestic Violence. Mr. Hutto was driving down the center of the roadway in a gold-colored Ford F-150. Mr. Hutto began throwing numerous objects out of the vehicle including nails and bottles to disable the Deputy’s pursuing vehicle.
The Deputy’s vehicle sustained a broken windshield and damaged tires. Mr. Hutto’s vehicle became disabled on Lawrence County Road 222. Mr. Hutto, as he exited the vehicle pointed a gun at the Deputy. The Deputy immediately discharged their firearm striking Mr. Hutto in his side. Mr. Hutto fell adjacent to his vehicle. Medical assistance was immediately requested. Mr. Hutto succumbed to his injuries.
It was later determined the gun was a flare gun loaded with a modified 12 gage shotgun shell.
The Deputy is on paid administrative leave. Due to the shooting involving one of his own, Sheriff Sanders has asked the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to investigate. Sheriff Sanders cannot comment further on the investigation and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating fully.
Sheriff Sanders says “we have an incredible group of men and women that serve Lawrence County and put themselves in harm’s way. I stand by my Deputies. Any threat to their safety will be met in kind. Please keep my Deputy, the Deputy’s family, and the families affected by this in your thoughts and prayers.”
