Grand Jury clears Florence Police Officer involved in officer-involved shooting

The shooting happened on the 200 block of North Walnut Street in Florence.

FLORENCE, Ala. — UPDATE (5/21): According to Chris Connolly, Lauderdale County District Attorney,  a grand jury has cleared the Florence officer responsible for shooting and killing Bart Barcelou whule serving an arrest warrant. The case presented to the Grand Jury last week and today they returned a "No Bill" ruling in the case. 

UPDATE (4/ 02) : The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office has identified the person who was killed during Monday's officer-involved shooting in Florence. According to official statements from the sheriff's office, the person is 42-year-old Bart James Barcelou, a resident of Florence.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office revealed that Barcelou had active warrants from Kane County, Utah, including three counts of rape and one count of dealing in harmful material to a minor by an adult.

Previous story: One person was killed Monday morning after a shooting involving a Florence police officer.

According to officials from the Florence Police Department, the shooting happened on the 200 block of North Walnut Street in Florence just before 11 a.m. FPD Chief Ron Tyler stated during a livestreamed press conference that officers were trying to serve an out-of-state warrant, and that the suspect resisted, presenting a "very violent lethal threat," prompting the use of lethal force.

Florence police have confirmed that the officer involved in the incident was not injured. 

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation. In an update made at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Sheriff Joe Hamilton released a statement confirming the death of the suspect.

Hamilton also said the suspect was being served on a rape warrant at the time of the shooting, and that the suspect "possessed two knives, one in each hand, during the incident." He also said an attempt of a less-lethal taser was made, and that body cam footage of the incident does exist.

"Due to an ongoing investigation, no further details can be provided," Hamilton said.
