A big upgrade is in the works for Goldsmith-Schiffman Field, which dates to the 1930s.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A stadium that dates to the 1930s will be getting a major overhaul.

The City of Huntsville has approved a contract with a company that will begin design work on the Goldsmith-Schiffman Park Development project.

The Georgia-based Foresite Group was selected for civil engineering and landscape architecture work related to the local landmark.

“Goldsmith-Schiffman Field holds a special place in the annals of Huntsville sports history,” Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said. “We’re looking forward to this assessment of the facility and the opportunity to carve a path to the park’s future.”

Goldsmith-Schiffman Field is located on Beirne Ave. NE, just northeast of the Washington Street/I-565 interchange. The field opened in 1934 as a high school football stadium and now hosts flag football games.

The facility is named for Oscar Goldsmith, Lawrence B. Goldsmith, Annie Schiffman Goldsmith, Robert L. Schiffman, and Elsie Strauss Schiffman, who donated the land on which the stadium was built.

Renovation plans include the construction of pickleball courts, a grass lawn with space for two flag football fields, a new concession/restroom building and a playground. Officials hope to retain much of the stadium's iconic stone wall, though they said it must undergo a structural engineering evaluation.
