Local artists reflect as Panoply 2023 comes to a close

This year marked the 41st arts and performance festival in Huntsville, and while many exhibitors traveled here to attend, quite a few more are locals.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Sunday marked the closure of another successful Panoply weekend. As one of the premiere arts and entertainment events in North Alabama, many artists travel from miles around to attend. Many still are locals, meaning you can support them even after the festival closes out for another year.

"Panoply is a fantastic event," declared Jessica Nunno, artist and owner of Inkspitter Studio. "I've been out here for a couple years doing Panoply, and it's one of the events that I look forward to coming to every year."

Nunno's studio is in the Lowe Mill complex, but she's made sure to come out to Panoply. Artists from every medium prepare weeks for this event, just like she did.

"It takes a lot to get ready for an event like this. I've spent, seriously, the whole month getting ready."

We spoke with another local artist, Rossina Boyer of Matices de Colores Arts. While not a Huntsville native - she was born in Peru - Boyer said she feels Huntsville and Panoply welcome artists from all backgrounds with open arms.

"I've seen a lot of new artists coming from all around the U.S., and it's been amazing," she said. "I think it's a good opportunity to meet artists, support them, and … to continue supporting the arts throughout the year."

Boyer's story shines through her artwork. "A lot of my art, and elements and everything that I use, is based on what I feel, who I am."

It's clear to all that Panoply is about the arts... but people still have to eat! And there was no shortage of local food vendors over the weekend, like Albert Toh of New South Hot Dog & Sushi.

"Our sushi hot dog is very artistic and is part of what we do, so it fits in perfectly," Toh said.

During our conversation, Toh realized Sunday marked exactly four years since he began his venture.

"Our first day we went out to serve was for years ago, April 30," he said. "Oh, my God, fourth year anniversary is today! And this is our third year in Panoply.

"This is always what we wanted when we first started, and we are finally here."
