Sunday, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for Oakwood Farms Market’s new state of the art facility, which is slated to open in spring 2019. The expanded market will include a restaurant, greenhouse, and walking trail, spanning across more than 18 acres of land. It will be located across from the Oakwood University campus entrance.
“The expansion is going to be more community based,” said Kenn Dixon, Director of Integrated Marketing and Public Relations at Oakwood University. “People can go in and actually pick the food. There will be more interaction. There will be walking trails.”
Oakwood Farms Market first opened in spring 2017. What makes the market unique is that most of the produce is grown right on Oakwood University’s farms.
The new market will be an experience on a much larger scale.
“If they want to sit by the water and enjoy fresh produce, they can,” said Dixon. “There will be smoothies. They will be able to make a smoothie with their fresh food.”
Dennis Dunkins looks forward to getting fresh produce at the new Oakwood Farms Market and says farm fresh is the only way to go.
“I will be buying whatever they have that I eat — squash, onions, potatoes,” said Dunkins. “The taste, the flavor, the joy of fixing it just gives me a great deal of exhilaration when I’m preparing food.”
The Oakwood Farms Market is the only market of its kind within about a 25 mile radius whose produce is nearly all grown on their own farms.
According to Dixon, a lot more produce will be available at the new facility. Until that opens next spring, you can continue to shop at Oakwood Farms Market for fresh produce everyday except for Saturday.
