Alabama A&M shooting update: second suspect arrested

The second suspect in the recent shooting at Alabama A&M was booked into the Madison County Jail on Friday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala — UPDATE: The second suspect in the Alabama A&M shooting has been identified. Christopher Thomas, 20, was booked into the Madison County Jail around 10 p.m. on Friday, August 26, on an assault charge.

Willie Nance, 23, was booked in the Madison County Jail early this morning on an assault charge. The other individual remains in the hospital.

Huntsville Police Violent Crimes Unit Investigators are have assault-non-family-gun warrants for both individuals involved in the shooting at Alabama A&M last night. 

Huntsville Police Violent Crimes Unit Investigators are obtaining  warrants for both individuals involved in the shooting on the campus of Alabama A&M earlier this evening. 

According to Huntsville Police, both individuals will be booked in the Madison County Jail when they are released from the hospital. The identities of the individuals involved will not be released until they are booked into the jail. 

Alabama A&M police officials gave an update on the incident today that lead to campus safety alerts. They said they received a call at about 5:30 p.m. of a fight in school cafeteria and a possible active shooter. The two people left the building and shot one another outside. One ran back in to the building, prompting the alert.

Both are being treated for their injuries. Police said that a large area is taped off because of shell casings at multiple locations. Huntsville and campus police are continuing to investigate. One of the people involved has been detained.

They also remind everyone on campus that if they see something, even a fight, to report it.

Alabama A&M students received an alert at about 6:00 p.m. warning of an "armed person on campus. Campus officials posted on social media that "The University is aware of a developing public safety emergency near the Knight Center. Out of extreme precaution, all individuals are asked to remain clear of the Knight Complex until further notice.".

The campus gave an "all clear" notice at about 6:30 p.m.

Huntsville police have since said that this was not an active shooter incident.

Huntsville police released the following statement:

Huntsville Police responded to assist Alabama A&M Police Department around 5:40 p.m. with a shooting call outside a residence hall at 4900 Meridian Street.

Alabama A&M Police initially took the lead on the call since it was on their campus. They have now asked HPD to lead the investigation.

At this time, HPD’s Violent Crimes Unit Investigators have determined the shooting is an isolated incident and stemmed from an altercation between two individuals. 

One individual involved showed up at Huntsville Hospital in a personal vehicle with minor injuries. The second person involved was detained at the scene and has minor injuries. 

At this time, there is no evidence to indicate anyone else was involved in this incident. This was not an active shooter incident.

HPD continues to investigate, and no further information is available at this time
