Standoff ends with one in custody, Rainsville police say

Officers making a welfare check were threatened with violence by the woman inside the Lee Ave. home, officials said.

RAINSVILLE, Ala. — Members of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (SRT) assisted Rainsville officers in a standoff situation Friday evening, the police department shared on social media. When it was all over, a woman was placed into custody and no injuries were reported.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. Friday when Rainsville police officers responded to a call for a welfare check at a home on Lee Avenue. Officials said they found the woman had barricaded herself in the home. They said she was threatening to harm any officers that entered the home, as well as herself.

Officers and SRT members tried for nearly two hours to talk their way into ending the situation with no success. Rainsville police said tear gas was then deployed inside the home. SRT members were then able to get inside the home and take the woman into custody.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community. The name of the woman will not be released by officials. It is not known what prompted the initial welfare check.
