HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — At the 2024 Space & Missile Defense Symposium, it's not just about the companies being showcased. There was a Swearing In Ceremony for new U.S. Military Recruits, including 21 future soldiers and 10 future sailors.

Space and Missile Defense Command Sg. Major John Foley said, "I think it's incredible that we have young men and women that want to serve our nation."

These recruits are joining in a much needed time for the Armed Forces. The U.S. Department of Defense says military recruiting goals fell short by 41,000 in 2023. Some joining Wednesday will be deployed soon. U.S. Army Recruit Sabrina Denson said, "I'll ship out to basic training next month. On September 16th, I'm heading to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and I'll be there for AIT training as well."

For Denson, this is more than just a dream. "It's more like it was destined for me to do this. So, I feel, right now, to be able to serve to my full capacity. I want to serve my country. And ultimately, I believe the Army will provide me with endless opportunities to serve and give back and ultimately become the future leader," said Denson.

U.S. Navy Recruit Austin McGinley said his inspiration comes from a certain family member. "I wanted to follow my grandfather's footsteps. He was in the Navy," said McGinley. He talks about how his grandfather is motivating him to shoot for the stars. "I just want to do something to make him proud. Even though he's not here with me, he's still watching over me," said McGinley.

These recruits are ready to serve their country with support coming from every direction. "It really does mean a lot and it makes me feel good that we have people that really want to serve our armed forces and the nation," said Foley.
