Redstone Arsenal boosts security against crime surge

This year, security have already made 20 gun-related arrests and 30 drug-related arrests.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — In response to a surge in incidents involving unregistered firearms and drugs, Redstone Arsenal is going to tighten up security at its gates and during routine traffic stops.

According to Deputy Police Chief Dennis Brown, in fiscal year 2022, four people were arrested for carrying unregistered guns, while 29 were arrested for drugs. In 2023, those numbers went up to 17 for guns and 13 for drugs. This year, they have already made 20 gun-related arrests and 30 drug-related arrests.

A recent inspection of 140 vehicles did not turn up any guns or drugs, but officers found some minor issues. For the operation, Redstone police teamed up with the Madison County Sheriff's Office, bringing in a drug detection team.
