ATHENS, Ala. — Recycling is a part of a larger effort to save our planet and keep trash off the streets.
Athens-Limestone County Recycling Center is doing its part to make sure every resident has the accessibly to items that will help them do the right thing. The recycling center has started taking container plastics #1, #2 and #5.
The manager of the recycling plant, Ruby McCartney explained, "We do container plastics at Athens-Limestone Recycling Center. No toys, no plastic furniture, no swimming pools, none of that kind of stuff. Container plastics only.”
Athens-Limestone County Recycling Center does not pick up the items.
Residents are responsible for dropping them off and sorting through the plastic. Check the bottom of a plastic item to find the recycling symbol and the number associated with that item.
A #1 container plastic is a water, soda or Gatorade bottle.
#2 plastics are things like your laundry detergent bottles or a milk jug.
#5 containers are easy to spot. If you've had yogurt or even microwave mac-n-cheese, you can recycle those cartons too.
McCartney wants everyone to do their part. "It is better for the environment, it creates jobs throughout Alabama, and throughout the United States, and the country," she said.
