Woman injured in shooting; suspect dead following Saturday stand-off

Police say the woman's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — UPDATE: This story has been updated to reflect information from Huntsville Police stating that, "An armed suspect fired at a fleeing female in front of an HPD officer. An officer discharged his weapon, mortally wounding the suspect.

"No officers were injured during the incident.

"Per protocol, HPD requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to lead the investigation following the incident. Please direct any further questions about the incident to SBI."

At first, Huntsville Police said that the suspect was in custody and later said they were dead at the scene.

After taking over investigation of the incident, ALEA released the following statement:

"On Saturday Aug. 24, at the request of the Huntsville Police Department (HPD), Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting involving an officer with HPD. The incident occurred when HPD received a call for service regarding a domestic violence situation in the 6200 Block of Rime Village Drive in Huntsville. 

Once on scene, officers encountered an individual with a firearm that fired at the fleeing female. The officer returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The suspect, identified as Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

"No officers were injured over the course of the incident. Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office. "

A woman was injured Saturday morning during an incident in northwest Huntsville that involved gunfire and a police standoff.

Huntsville Police Department officials say the situation began just before 10 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of Rime Village Dr.

Police said they were responding to a domestic violence call when the shooting took place. A woman and a child were taken from the apartment, and a man inside the unit reportedly barricaded himself inside.

The woman was taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

The scene was cleared by 1 p.m.

An investigation is ongoing, HPD said.
