Huntsville's Free LGBTQ+ Closet trailer stolen

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A local comedy club is helping replenish Huntsville's Free LGBTQ+ Clothing Closet, which provides clothing, shoes, and accessories to anyone who needs them, after someone stole a trailer and other equipment on Saturday.

The Closet is part of Shenanigans Comedy Theatre's outreach program

In a post on Facebook, the group showed the trailer, which is plain on the outside but highly recognizable on the inside. While those affiliated with the group would love to find the trailer, they say they're realistic about the chances of finding it in usable condition.

In a GoFundMe post, organizer Kimberly Wilson of Shenanigans explained that the loss is significant.

"Besides taking thousands of dollars of clothing from the hands of folks that need them, they stole the place where we store, sort, and distribute clothes to the community," she said. "They took a portable AC unit, a generator, a tent for events, clothing racks, clothes hangers, organizers, and so much more."

The Free LGBTQ+ Closet goes to various events around the city, including artist pop-ups. It appears at Shenanigans performance events, Pride events, and other places the group is welcomed.

New and gently used wearables, including new gender-affirming items, are provided to anyone at no charge. The selection usually includes plus-sized clothing and dress clothes, including slacks, button downs, and dress shoes. The trailer provides private dressing room space for recipients to try on clothing.

The Closet continues to work to purchase and find items for individuals as clothing requests come in to continue to serve the community.
