HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — COVID-19 has meant life adjustments for everyone and for many, it has meant more stress and anxiety. Many are concerned about the health of themselves and their loved ones as well as the economic impact of the virus.
Therapists say whatever you do, don't bottle up what you're feeling.
"Really the important thing to do is to communicate those thoughts and those feelings," said Jasmine Butler, Children's Division Director at the Nova Center at WellStone. "Naturally, someone's response is to isolate -- I just want to keep it all in. I'm just going to handle it myself," she explained. "But it's really important to get those thoughts and those feelings out."
Holding in these feelings isn't healthy. Butler says that could ultimately lead to depression. It could also lead to more anxiety and worry or even to substance abuse or trying to cope with these feelings in other unhealthy ways.
Be sure to check in with your loved ones and show your support.
"It's more important than ever to lend a listening ear in the way that we're able to," she said.
If you're interested in getting therapy and still want to practice social distancing, you can do so safely right from your home with therapists at WellStone Behavioral Health.
"Our doors are open," said Butler. "We're willing to help to provide therapy to meet the need in whatever way we can-- whether that's over the phone or via video chat. We have therapists here that are willing and available to assist with processing what's happening or with coping skills. We can even help family members who may be struggling to communicate with loved ones who are having difficulty with it."
