ALABAMA, USA — While the virtual tours started in April, there are only two tours left to learn about Alabama farmers.
The May 15 Virtual Field Trip features forestry, the largest sector of Alabama’s agricultural industry, with Choctaw County’s Cheryl Lassiter.
Nationally, Alabama ranks third in timberland acreage, trailing only Oregon and Georgia.
“We’ve all gone to a grocery store in recent months and seen either empty or nearly empty shelves in the paper goods section, so we thought it would be important to highlight how those paper goods start in Alabama’s forests during the Virtual Field Trips,” said Mary Wilson, Federation director of news services. “We also want folks to know that our forest landowners work hard to make trees a renewable resource, planting more trees annually than are harvested.”
The Virtual Field Trip series wraps up Friday, May 22, with Lee County’s Garrett Dixon discussing how he grows cotton and other row crops.
“Row crop farmers grow things like cotton, corn, soybeans and peanuts,” Wilson said. “While they use big machinery and need lots of acreage, row crop farmers work very hard to be good stewards of the land, and we’ll talk about that some during our final Virtual Field Trip.”
