HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Police have arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured a Grissom High School cross country runner.
The suspect vehicle fled the scene, but witnesses provided a detailed description that led to officers locating the vehicle and driver.
After investigators interviewed the suspect, Jarod Monroe Severance, 21, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
Officers say they responded to the scene at the intersection of Weatherly Road and Cannstatt Drive on Wednesday morning. The vehicle fled the scene before police arrived.
One teenager was transported to Huntsville Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The intersection remains closed as the investigation continues.
Huntsville City Schools confirmed that the teenager who was hit is a 9th grader on the Grissom cross country team. A representative for the district shares the statement send to Grissom Cross Country families:
Dear Grissom Cross Country families,
We are saddened to inform you of an unfortunate incident involving one of our cross country team members, who was struck by a vehicle during an early morning run and transported to the hospital. The accident took place at the intersection of Weatherly Road and Cannstatt Drive.
We are in close contact with the student's family and will continue to offer them our full support during this difficult time. If any students feel the need for emotional support, our school counselor is available to speak with them.
Our thoughts are with the student and their family, and we appreciate your care as we navigate this together.
