Teen's shooting leads to arrests in burglary investigation in Decatur

Police say a teenager is in critical condition after Friday's shooting; meanwhile his assailant, a 14-year-old boy, is connected with theft incidents in the city.

DECATUR, Ala. — Investigators say the shooting of a juvenile Friday in Decatur has led to the arrest of four people - one adult and three minors - connected with at least two theft incidents in the city. According to police, a male juvenile was brought to Decatur Morgan Hospital on Friday with an apparent gunshot wound. He was later taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he remains as of Sunday in critical condition.

Meanwhile, investigators traced the scene of the shooting to the 1100 block of 7th Avenue SE. A 14-year-old boy was identified as the suspect and charged with first-degree assault.

While piecing the situation together, it was revealed that the vehicle the gunshot victim was brought to the hospital in had been reported stolen back in February. The shooting suspect, two other juveniles, and a man identified as 18-year-old Kaleb Kirk, were found to be in possession of the vehicle.

A search warrant was obtained for a residence connected with the group. There, police reportedly found a number of stolen guns connected with an April 30 burglary at Bama Pawn on Beltline Road.

Kirk was arrested and charged with a first- and second-degree count of receiving stolen property. He was taken to the Morgan County Jail. He was booked and later released on $7,500 bond.

The 14-year-old shooting suspect was additionally charged with first-degree receiving stolen property. One 17-year-old suspect was charged with first- and second-degree receiving stolen property, while the second 17-year-old was charged with a single count of first-degree receiving stolen property.

The three minors were taken to the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Facility in Tuscumbia.
