A ten-year-old boy is in UAB Children's Hospital after surviving a shooting in Sheffield that killed his mother. According to Sheffield Police, the boy was trying to protect his mother when he was shot.

In a statement, police say they responded to a call of a child with a gunshot wound 9 p.m. Sunday evening. When they went into the apartment, they found Ashley McClung, 38, and Adam Narmore, 40, both dead. Investigators add that the two got into an altercation and Narmore shot McClung with a 410 shotgun, then killed himself. Investigators say police gave first aid to the child, who was alert and speaking to officers at the scene, by applying a tourniquet to slow the bleeding. He was transferred to Keller Hospital and was later airlifted to U.A.B Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Investigators believe Narmore and McClung were in a dating relationship. Their bodies are being sent to forensics for autopsy.
