HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An ADA-compliant pier at Hays Nature Preserve is now available anglers of all abilities, thanks to a private donation.
A celebratory ribbon-cutting provided an opportunity to thank the James Gordon Williams Legacy Fund, which donated $85,000 to fund the pier’s design and construction. A former employee of the Hays family, Williams wanted to give back to the community and the family that he had always appreciated.
“It’s people that make Huntsville special and that is certainly exemplified by the generosity of Mr. Williams,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “It’s also a testimony to the benevolence of the Hays family as an inspiration for this pier as part of the park the family donated to the City.”
Huntsville Attorney Christine Hinson manages Mr. Williams’ estate and worked on the donation with the Operation Green Team Foundation. Huntsville Public Works installed the ADA-compliant sidewalk leading to the pier.
The project was completed just in time for the fourth annual Fishing for Fun Day at Hays Nature Preserve. This free event is Wednesday, July 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. Live bait is available, but anglers must bring a pole or choose from one of the limited poles available for use. Children must have an adult assist them.
“The pier is a tremendous addition to Bar Lake at Hays Nature Preserve, and its opening on the eve of a children’s fishing event is perfect timing,” said Landscape Management Director Brian Walker. “We are certainly grateful for the kindness of Mr. Williams to provide a special gift that will be appreciated for years to come.”
