TVA to host dam tours for its 90th anniversary

After closing to the public for nearly 20 years, the TVA is choosing a limited number of people to visit some of the most monumental dams in the Tennessee Valley.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — As a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) initiative 'Built for the People,' and for the celebration of the TVA's 90th Anniversary, the valley's tours will be be continuing into August. Showing the public what the TVA is known for, they ensure you are bound to learn something new.

According to the TVA, the Authority was created by Congress to essentially "make life better for the people who call it home."

TVA is known mainly for providing electricity over 150 companies and controlling the amount of flood damage caused by the entire river system. However, they are responsible for a variety of things such as power production, water quality, water supply, and so much more, including recreation that occurs on TVA rivers and lakes.

Some of the dams have been closed to the public since 9/11 and will be opening back up for the first time this summer!

The following tours are being offered twice a day at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. local time:

      • Norris Dam – August 11
      • Chickamauga Dam – August 25
      • Wilson Dam – August 4 and August 18
      • Pickwick Dam – September 8

Each tour will last between 60-90 minutes and will allow participants to view how the dam works and how TVA produces safe and clean hydropower to those 153 local power companies.

Over 1,000 people have registered for previous tours, however, registering does not guarantee a spot on the tour. Each tour will be limited to only 20 people. You can sign up here to be chosen for the random drawing. Winners will be selected and notified a week before the tour.

 Registration closes July 23.
