HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Millions of Alabamians left their jobs in 2021 and January is known as the great resignation.
The issue that many companies are facing is not recruiting employees, its retaining them.
Dr. Mark Vitale of the University of Phoenix says employers need to shift their hiring techniques.
“Employers need to shift their paradigm from this being a transactional relationship right?,” Dr. Vitale said. “’I give you money, you give me work’ to more of a transformational one, where employers are partnering with employees for a life long journey.”
Dr. Vitale says workers want jobs that bridge a gap between who they are and where they want to go. Oftentimes, when workers leave their jobs, pay is not the only factor. Studies found that workers ages 22 to 35 say they would’ve stayed at their jobs if they were offered a four day work week.
Fixing the issue is not as simple as it seems, employees are tired of the current work system. Not only are people switching jobs they’re exiting out of the workforce completely.
”the older part of the workforce, 55 and up are primarily exiting and that's where the big part of our labor crunch is occurring because we're losing people,” Dr. Vitale explained.
