HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As of Nov. 1, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center won't be part of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Reciprocal Membership Program.
The program allows members of science centers or museums participating in the ASTC Passport Program to get benefits such as free general admission to museums outside of their home area, potentially saving travelers who love science and space hundreds of dollars in admission fees.
The USSRC recently posted the decision to its website and send FOX54 the following statement:
"We routinely assess the expenses we incur for memberships and affiliations as we strive to manage rising costs. As we enter our FY25 budget cycle, we have determined that membership in the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Reciprocal Membership Program has become too expensive to administer. We are, instead, investing in the experience for our members and visitors here at the Rocket Center.
"To achieve this, we’ve been working diligently to enhance the museum. Recent improvements include the newly renovated Rocket Park, featuring iconic rockets like the Jupiter C and Mercury Redstone. The iconic Pathfinder Shuttle has been returned to its rightful place atop the shuttle stack, completing the Rocket City Spaceline. Additionally, our “Dare to Explore” exhibit in the main atrium of the museum has been expanded with exciting new additions such as Blue Origin’s BE-3U engine, a flown SpaceX flight suit and a model of United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket.
"Our members will still receive valuable benefits that include:
- Unlimited admission to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center during normal business hours.
- 10% discount on food and merchandise purchases at the Rocket Center.
"Cost-saving measures like this help us provide access to The Rocket Center for as many people as possible through programs like our Mission Inspiration field trip scholarships for Title 1 schools and Museums 4 All, which offers reduced admission to those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits)."
