Voters head to the polls : Breaking down proposed Statewide Amendment Number 1

It's Super Tuesday which means a major day for this year's primary campaign.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Well, it's Super Tuesday which means Alabama one of the string of states headed to the polls. One thing on the ballot today getting a lot of chatter is a proposed amendment to the state constitution. So let's break down just what voting yes or no on this matter could mean.

It's Amendment Number 1 which  establishes the priority of the next year's budgets over the approval of other laws by the legislature. The proposed amendment  authorizes the legislature to sign and transmit local laws or constitutional amendments before passing a budget.

If the majority of voters vote "yes" on Amendment 1 the Alabama constitution will be changed to allow proposed local laws and proposed local constitutional amendments to be considered before the budgets are approved and sent to the governor without three fifths of the legislature's approval.

If the majority of voters vote "no" on Amendment 1, the Alabama constitution will not be changed and proposed local laws and proposed local constitutional amendments will continue to require the additional three-fifths (3/5ths) vote before being considered before a budget is passed.

There are also no costs or additional taxes related to Amendment 1. This amendment comes along with of course presidential, state, and local offices.

FOX54 spoke with some voters about what voting means to them, and Ricky Leonard is one voter who explained that he never takes this opportunity for granted. "Many people have fought and died for a right to vote. and it's our duty to vote to make sure that we can that we run this country properly. and it and everyone's freedoms are met. This is a wonderful country. everyone has the right to vote. We govern ourselves. we need to take advantage of that and vote right not only for us, but for everyone in this country. And I have never missed a time to vote in my entire life."
