HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Auburn University received the highest marks among Alabama's "national" universities in the annual ranking of schools by U.S. News & World Report.
Auburn rates 105th among the major comprehensive universities, according to the study that was released on Tuesday.
The University of Alabama tied for 171st and the University of Alabama in Huntsville rated 244th in the National Universities category.
For Auburn, highlights include a 51st overall rank for national public schools and 57th for undergraduate engineering program.
The University of Alabama scored 26th for its nursing program while UAH rated 74th in nursing.
Schools in the National Universities category offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs. They include most of the largest and best-known schools in the country.
In the category of Regional Universities-South, the University of North Alabama landed in the 26th spot and Alabama A&M rated 97th.
Oakwood University placed 182nd among Liberal Arts Colleges nationwide.
The rankings considered 17 measures of academic quality. More than 1,500 institutions were evaluated and ranked.
The report also compiles information on tuition, demographics and admissions requirements.
Princeton University was rated #1 in the National Universities category. It is followed by MIT and Harvard University. Stanford and Yale round out the Top 5.
