HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The University of Alabama in Huntsville has confirmed multiple cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, on campus, prompting immediate health precautions and a comprehensive awareness campaign.

The bacterial infection, which spreads through airborne transmission via coughing, can initially present like a common cold before developing into more severe respiratory symptoms. University health officials warn that infected individuals are most contagious during the early stages of the illness, with symptoms potentially emerging 5 to 21 days after initial exposure.

Characteristic symptoms include cold-like signs followed by intense coughing fits that can cause gagging or vomiting. Notably, patients may appear healthy between these episodes, making early detection challenging.

Healthcare providers recommend immediate medical evaluation for anyone experiencing persistent coughing.

The university is strongly encouraging preventive measures, particularly vaccination. The Tdap booster, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, is recommended for all adults who haven't been vaccinated in the past decade.

UAH Health Services is facilitating easy access to vaccinations, with most insurance plans covering the booster at 100% through the on-campus clinic.

Students and staff are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms over the next three weeks. Those diagnosed or suspected of having pertussis should self-isolate for at least five days after starting antibiotic treatment.

The most accurate diagnostic method involves a nasopharyngeal swab test.

Vulnerable populations, including infants and unvaccinated young children, face higher risks of severe illness. The university is taking a proactive approach, urging faculty to communicate these health guidelines to students and providing comprehensive resources through their Health Services.
