Winter gear items needed for Huntsville's homeless

The North Alabama Homeless Coalition kicked off their winter gear drive. Due to the pandemic, there's an even bigger need this year.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — As the city of Huntsville grows, so does the homeless population.

As it gets colder, people who are homeless will need items to help keep warm.

Due to the pandemic, there isn't as much space in local shelters, creating an even bigger need for winter gear. Fortunately, groups in Huntsville are working to meet that need.

The North Alabama Homeless Coalition has kicked off their winter gear drive.

They are taking up donations of large blankets, plus size coats and winter clothing, thermal underwear, hand warmers, and any other items that can help keep someone warm when out in the elements.

North Alabama Homeless Coalition Executive Director, Lineise Arnold, said, "When you think about ordering blankets, we ask that you order at least a full size blanket so the client can actually cover up in the blanket appropriately, as well as to think about the type of blanket that you would want if you were outside in the elements."

If you don't feel safe getting out during the pandemic, you can shop online and mail in donations to 1580 Sparkman Drive, Huntsville, AL, Suite 111.
