Latest road closures, Huntsville AL | Winter Storm 2024 - The Latest

Dangerous cold continues into Wednesday, with more road closures and deteriorating road conditions.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — While temperatures warmed slightly and the sun came out on Wednesday, moisture on roads is refreezing, leading to increasingly dangerous road conditions. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect for those west of the I-65 and a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for those east of I-65 through 9 a.m. Wednesday. A wintry mix began falling late Sunday evening, dusting all of North Alabama in varying amounts of snow, ice, and sleet. 

Here are the latest updates on traffic conditions, public safety announcements, and major delays and closures as they come in.

January 17, 2024

Per Huntsville Police, as of 6:15 p.m.:

  • Drake Ave. is closed between Whitesburg Drive and Garth Road due to an 18-wheeler stuck in the roadway
  • Lily Flagg Road from Valley View Drive to Louis Drive 
  • Dug Hill Road at U.S. Highway 431
  • Slaughter Road from Old Madison Pike to Highway 72 West 
  • Westbound University Drive between Enterprise Way and Waddell Drive

10:30 a.m.:  Huntsville Police Department has closed the westbound lanes of Weatherly Road from Canstatt Drive to Todd Mill Road and Executive Drive west of Ascent Trail.

10:27 a.m.: The City of Madison says 72 and Wall Triana highway are in a danger zone. They are asking people to not attempt to drive with roadways still frozen.  

UPDATE: Oakwood Avenue is now back open.

8:30 a.m.: According to Huntsville Police Department, Oakwood Avenue is closed at Pulaski Pike due to an 18-wheeler stuck in the roadway.

8:10 a.m.: According to the City of Madison, roadways are still frozen. Areas that broke up yesterday have re-frozen into black ice. The City of Madison asks people to not attempt to drive.

3 a.m. : The City of Madison is reporting that most roads in Madison are iced over and too dangerous for travel. The intersection at Hughes Road and Old Madison Pike is iced over. Travel is not advised.  

January 16, 2024

10 p.m.: According to Jackson County EMA, all Roads in Jackson County are still deemed impassable until further notice.

5:40 p.m.: Huntsville Police Department has added Golf Road from Hunters Ridge Drive to Highridge Drive to closures list. 

2:30 p.m.: Huntsville Police Department has added Cecil Ashburn Drive to its closures list. HPD says barricades have been placed across the roadway.

9:20 a.m.:  The City of Madison reports the roadways in the City of Madison are extremely dangerous. Eastview is still closed due to conditions. 

8:15 a.m. ALDOT update:

Routes in much of North Alabama are frozen or have icy patches. Frozen conditions are more widespread in areas that received more liquid precipitation. Crews are actively treating, but expect roads to remain hazardous.

ALDOT’s North Region includes Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Morgan, Limestone, Madison, Cullman, Marshall, Jackson, Dekalb, Etowah and Cherokee counties.

 9:15p.m.: Cullman County EMA says all county roads and bridges in the county should be considered impassable until further notice.

8:30p.m. HPD has added Mountain Gap Road (east of Memorial Parkway to Chaney Thompson Road) to its closures list.

4 p.m.: City of Huntsville, City of Madison, and Madison County government operations will be closed Tuesday.

3:20 p.m.: Calhoun Community College will run virtual learning only on Tuesday. Visit this page for the latest announcements as they come in.

Meanwhile, the City of Madison reports that Eastview Drive is now impassable and will be closed. Public Works will be setting up barricades. Please seek alternate routes.

3 p.m.: The U.S. Space & Rocket Center will remain closed Tuesday. The Decatur City Hall will be closed Tuesday and garbage/recycling has been delayed by 1 day. Visit this page for the latest announcements as they come in.

2:15 p.m.: Jackson County Sheriff's Office reports that Alabama 117 has reopened following an earlier rollover.

Meanwhile, several colleges have announced closures for Tuesday, as well as Marshall Space Flight Center. Visit this page for the latest announcements as they come in.

1:30 p.m.: Temperatures continue their downward trend as the day wears on, and icy patches continue to develop on roads and overpasses. Jackson County officials responded to an overturned truck on Alabama 117 earlier in the day, and officials warn that conditions may continue to deteriorate as snow and sleet continue to mix.

1 p.m.: Limestone County EMA deems all roads and bridges impassable.

12:50 p.m.: Redstone Arsenal announces they will remain closed Tuesday.

12 p.m.: Many Shoals-area schools have chosen to remain closed through Wednesday. At present tally, Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, and Sheffield City Schools, as well as Colbert and Lauderdale County systems, will be closed through Wednesday. 11:05 a.m.: Florence Municipal Court will be closed Tuesday; Florence City Council meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday.

HPD reports Green Mountain Road and Bankhead Parkway have been closed. HPD will make more road closure announcements through their Facebook page as they occur.

11 a.m. Madison City Schools will remain closed Tuesday; Muscle Shoals City Schools will remain closed through Wednesday.

10:45 a.m. Huntsville City Schools will remain closed Tuesday due to the winter weather conditions. Visit this page for the latest announcements as they come in.

10:30 a.m. Huntsville International Airport remains operating normally, although there have been a number of delays and cancellations impacting the schedule. Click here to check flights you may be interested in.

Madison City Police advise residents to stay off the roads due to deteriorating conditions.

9 a.m.: Colbert County Emergency Management Agency announces all county roads and bridges should be considered impassable until further notice. Only emergency vehicles should travel on these roads and bridges.
