AUSTIN, Texas — The maker of a popular card game is suing Elon Musk company SpaceX for allegedly trespassing and damaging company-owned property.
Cards Against Humanity is suing the space exploration company for what the company calls the destruction of natural vegetation.
It all stems from a vacant piece of land near the Texas-Mexico border. In 2017, the game maker bought the land as a stunt to stop then-President Donald Trump from building a border wall there. The land was purchased through a crowdfunding campaign in which 150,000 people each paid $15.
The company said it keeps a “No Trespassing” sign on the property and no wall was ever built there.
According to the lawsuit, SpaceX has been using the property without permission for about six months. That includes clearing vegetation, parking vehicles, storing gravel and running generators, the lawsuit claims.
Cards Against Humanity said it acquired the property “for the sole purpose of ensuring that it would stay that way.”
“SpaceX’s abuse of this Property has not only destroyed its natural condition, but has also caused even greater harm to CAH by virtue of the damage it has caused to CAH’s relationship with its paying supporters,” it said in the lawsuit.
Cards Against Humanity is asking for $15 million but said it would also “accept Twitter.com as compensation.” The company said if the lawsuit is successful, up to $100 per person will be passed on to the original 150,000 donors.
