MONTGOMERY, Ala — Alabama Sen. Doug Jones' wife Louise has tested positive for COVID-19, the senator announced in a Tweet on Wednesday.
Jones said that as a result of quarantining and taking care of his wife, he was unable to cast his vote to override President Trump's veto of a defense policy bill passed by Congress.
In a video attached to the Tweet, Jones called on his colleagues in Washington to override the veto.
"Please, please vote to override that veto. It is so important to the security of this country, for armed services, for the men and women in uniform, for the people of Alabama," Jones said.
While he is not able to help override the veto, Jones said he is glad to have been able to work on the bill.
The Democratic-controlled House voted to override the veto on Monday, December 28, requiring the Senate to vote whether to approve the override by a two-thirds vote.
If approved, the override would be the first of the Trump presidency.
"I worked really hard on the NDAA & I was hoping that my last vote in the Senate would be to override Trump’s veto. But my wonderful running mate Louise tested positive so I am quarantining & taking care of her," the Tweet reads.
Jones said his wife is not feeling too good but is OK. He also said that he has received a negative COVID-19 test.
