HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — People want a slice of the sweet life, and when Subway restaurants announced a footlong chocolate chip cookie late last year, foodies' tongues waggled and their taste buds tingled. Now, weeks into the item's full release across U.S. restaurant locations, the chain says they're rushing to meet demand.
The 12-inch cookie was previewed in December as a National Cookie Day promotion in select markets, and was released nationally in mid-January, along with a footlong Auntie Anne's pretzel and a footlong Cinnabon bakery-inspired churro. The three items are part of the chain's new "Sidekicks" line, and range in price from $2-$5 in-store, with the cookie being the higher-priced item.
This week, Subway representatives said in a release, "More than 3.5 million Sidekicks have been sold in the two weeks since launch, resulting in Subway rushing additional supply to meet guest crave. In particular, the Subway Footlong Cookie has had unprecedented demand."
That demand has apparently meant restrictions in how to purchase the sweet treat. While you can still obtain the other two items on third-party delivery apps like Grubhub, the cookie has been removed as an option.
People jonesing for that lengthy cookie must visit their local Subway stores in-person for the time being. Many stores also offer traditionally-sized cookies in individual and multi-pack options, both in-store and through delivery.
Subway currently boasts more than 12,000 stores in North America, and more than 18,000 stores globally.
