HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Food processing company TreeHouse foods pulled more than 500 varieties of frozen waffles this week in a recall over Listeria concerns.
Many stores sell the waffles made and recalled by the company and place them under their own name brands. Walmart's Great Value, Target's Good & Gather, and the Kodiak Cakes frozen line are among affected items sold nationwide.
Regional chains including Publix, Food Lion, Aldi, H-E-B, Giant, and the Canadian No Name label are also included in the recall.
Consumers of any affected item are asked to throw out the products or return them to place of purchase.
Representatives for TreeHouse said no illnesses have been reported. They said the issue was discovered while performing routine testing at its manufacturing facility.
Listeria bacteria can survive refrigeration and freezing, according to the Mayo Clinic. Healthy people rarely become ill from Listeria, they said, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms can appear between a few days to 30 days or more after eating contaminated food, and can include muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea, confusion and loss of balance.
The waffle recall comes just days following a massive recall affecting nearly 12 million pounds of meat and poultry products nationwide - also due to fears of Listeria contamination.
