A local group is fighting hard to make sure all kids have a safe place to play.

We spoke with a group of parents who are making sure children of all abilities can enjoy playgrounds in Hampton Cove. The lack of universally accessible playgrounds in the city is a cause close to the hearts of those involved in the Cove Universal Playground Project

We met with Sarah Connell, the Fundraising Chair of the Cove Universal Playground Committee. She says this is a cause close to her heart. “My daughter is five, and she has autism. And being able to provide a space where I feel like she’s safe id one of the main reasons why I am here and apart of this committee,” she said.

Connell says that this playground is necessary, not just for kids with special needs, but for all kids in the Huntsville area. She says they’re aren’t enough public playgrounds in the city, and kids, whether they have a disability or not need more safe places to play together.

The committee will be building a brand new playground in the Hampton Cove area, one that will be accessible and safe kids for kids of all abilities.

So what makes this different from any other playground?

This new playspace will be designed inclusively, with features and equipment that allow kids, who may have physical or cognitive disabilities to join in on the fun.

Sarah Connell says this playground will be one that families will be very excited about. She adds, “You can see some of the climbing features, the slides, the heights, the ramps. I mean, just all the things that makes this one pf the more unique playgrounds in Alabama, not just Huntsville.”

The playground should be finished next summer.
