A new recycling program is about to start in Madison County, and it will mean expanding service to thousands more people as well as big changes for recycling customers in Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County.
Recycling Alliance of North Alabama will take over recycling services for the county on August 1st. People who still want recycling service will need to sign up by Friday.
The small 18-gallon blue bins folks are used to setting outside next to the trash will be replaced with a 95-gallon recycling cart. It’s about the size of a green trash cart.
“We’ve outgrown the old program,” said Doc Holladay, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority, who says a lot has changed since the program started in 1990. “We’ve gone from servicing about 45,000 households to about 105,000 households on a weekly basis.”
Holladay says the larger carts are about efficiency.
“It will also allow us to do less frequent collection,” he said.
With the new program, instead of once a week, recycling pickup will happen once a month. About 25,000 homes who were previously not served will be able to get their recycling picked up. That will include homes in Gurley, Owens Cross Roads, and Hazel Green. Just like the old program, the new one is free of charge.
“If you want to be eligible for the August collection, you need to sign up by Friday,” said Holladay. “If you get signed up before Friday, we will get your cart delivered to you in July, and when we start collecting in August, you will be on the list to be collected.”
Recycling pickup schedules will be released after customers sign up for the new program.
Holladay says the easiest way to get a cart is to sign up online: https://recycling-alliance.com/
