Owens Cross Roads Elementary is getting a much-needed update thanks to a group of local women called the Owens Cross Roads Homemakers.

When Owens Cross Roads Principal Adam Hampton walks the halls of the elementary school, there’s something he can’t help but notice everyday.

“It’s been a long time since Owens Cross Roads School has had a paint job on the inside,” he said.

Hampton said a fresh coat of paint is long overdue, but the funds just haven’t been there to cover it.

However, thanks to a group of women called the Owens Cross Roads Homemakers, freshly painted walls are now possible.

“They gave us $3000, which was a great help,” said Hampton. “We would not have be able to get what we need to get painted without them.”

And that’s not the only update.

“Because they gave so much, we were able to free up a little bit more fund to be able to put in a half bath for our teachers,” he said.

As a Title I school, Hampton said they are able to get federal funding for technology and instructional materials, but it can be difficult to find money for building or maintenance needs.

“The school was built in 1949, and some of the women in Owens Cross Roads Homemakers started in first grade at the school,” he said.

Barbara Cooper, President of the Owens Cross Roads Homemakers said after Hampton explained to the women what the school needed, helping out was a no-brainer.

“They’re going to refresh the school, and I feel like that will help the kids be excited about being in school here because they are doing well,” said Cooper. “Make the kids proud of their school.”

The plan is for the paint job to happen while students are out for Christmas break.
