With the Highway 231 overpass now open to traffic, residents are learning more about the plan to revitalize South Memorial Parkway.
District 3 Councilwoman Jennie Robinson holds quarterly community meetings. Monday, residents got an update on the redevelopment going on right now in South Huntsville.
“Nothing could happen on the South Parkway until the overpass, the main line was open,”said Jennie Robinson, District 3 Councilwoman. “Everybody’s been waiting. Haysland Road is being constructed the new Grissom has been built, so this is going to be a new are for a lot of excited growth in South Huntsville,” she continued.
Now that cars are able to move freely on newly completed Highway 231 overpass, at South Memorial Parkway and Byrd Spring Road District 3 is now focusing on recruiting more businesses.
“We’re looking at Haysland Square and the redevelopment of Haysland Square, which will create a ripple effect all along South Parkway,” Robinson said.
It was standing room only at the community meeting held at the Bailey Cove Branch Library. Another project in the works is renovating the old Grissom High School into the Sandra Moon Community Complex, which includes building a bigger library.
“Going to be building a 39,000 sq. foot library. The library we’re standing in is 10,000 sq. feet, so it’s a substantial increase. The auditorium is going to remain. Arts Huntsville is taking over, its going to be a performing arts complex and Parks and Recreations has already taken over the two gyms and is renovating the ball fields,” she explained.
Demolition for the complex will begin in October. A project that’s currently underway is improvements to Ditto Landing, which will bring more opportunities for recreation.
“The Ditto Landing project is the river where they are building two new boulevard entrances and also going from 30 campsites to well over 100 campsites,” Robinson said.
The Sandra Moon Complex is expected to be complete in 2020.
