Huntsville organizations canvas communities as voter registration ends October 19

The last day to register to vote in the state of Alabama is October 19.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — If you're not already registered to vote, now is the time. Several groups have gone door-to-door to make sure people in Huntsville are ready to cast their ballots.

Leaders and organizations are now in the homestretch to get people registered to vote as tomorrow is the last day. Volunteers canvassed the Searcy Homes Public Housing Development and the Brookside community.

Organizations involved include 'Huntsville Housing Authority', 'No More Dirty, Inc.', 'The Coalition for Justice Through Civic Engagement', 'Lift Our Vote', the Delta Theta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in Huntsville, and in partnership with 'Vote Gone Viral' and 'Vote Huntsville'. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority, Inc. from Alabama A&M University also volunteered.

"We want the voters to know that they matter, and we want the voters to understand why it's so important to literally be engaged in voting," says Frederick Whitlow, II, Housing Authority Youth & Family Services Coordinator.

Whitlow pound the pavement with the groups for the past four weeks in hopes to connect with communities. It's part of the 'Everyday is Election Day!' campaign. He says the lack of those relationships is a problem with getting folks to vote.

"Not being informed in time, not having the right representation. When I say 'right' I mean, having representation - if you're running for something, you need to step into the neighborhood," added Whitlow.

Part of that reach is the youth. Gen-Z voters make up one in ten eligible voters this election according to Pew Research.

Erica Washington with WJAB at Alabama A&M University says younger folks mobilizing makes a huge impact.

"Hopefully it will show to them that young people actually care about this voting process, and yes 'Oh, I guess yeah if they go out and vote, then I need to go out and vote, because that means something is going to happen. There's going to be epic change in the voting process and what happens with the results."

"It's a heavy decision on a lot of us. And being so young, and having that power to make change, you know it's a force to be reckoned with, and to be able to use my platform as the face of the student body; to be elected by them as their leader, it means a lot," says SGA Alabama A&M University President, Japhe Jelks.

The deadline for online voter registration is tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. online. For more information, click here.
