HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — UPDATE (3/26): Democrat Marilyn Lands wins over a red district in a landslide.
(3/24): The race to fill ousted District 10 Rep. David Cole's seat will culminate with Tuesday's special election. Madison City Councilman Teddy Powell, the Republican candidate, will face Democratic opponent Marilyn Lands.
District 10 incorporates areas of Huntsville west of Memorial Parkway and south of Martin Road. It also includes Redstone Arsenal, the Triana community, and areas south of I-565 and east of County Line Rd. in Madison County.
Powell, 50, has been on the Madison City Council since 2016 and is a former budget analyst with the U.S. Department of Defense. According to his campaign website, issues of greatest importance for Powell include combating inflation, 'reducing government intervention' in healthcare, and securing the border.
65-year-old Lands, a licensed counselor who has championed improved mental health resources for children, previously ran for the Alabama House of Representatives in 2022. "Alabama must repeal its blanket ban on abortion, and focus on improving its broken healthcare system," Lands says on her campaign website.
Lands also lists building North Alabama's economic growth, investing in infrastructure, and improving quality education for all students as areas of special concern., echoing sentiments by Powell on their respective campaign lists.
Former Rep. David Cole resigned his post in October 2023 after pleading guilty to charges of voter fraud, specifically that he rented a closet-size space in a home to fraudulently run for office in a district where he did not live in 2022.
