HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Mac McCutcheon, Madison County Commission Chairman, announced his hope to stay in the post by announcing his candidacy in the upcoming elections in November.

The seat is generally filled by a general election, however McCutcheon was appointed to the post by Gov. Kay Ivey following his predecessor Dale Strong's election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

McCutcheon told FOX54 that at the time of his appointment to Madison County Commissioner in January of 2023, he was asked by the six sitting district commissioners if he’d promise to run for election in 2024. He said yes then, and is acting on that promise now.

The former Huntsville policeman said he is thoroughly enjoying his role in public service.

"Local government is not so much about the politics of the day that flows down from Washington or the states, it's about everyday needs that people have trying to live their lives," McCutcheon said.

Accompanying McCutcheon were a host of speakers and messages supporting his decision to run.

Via a written statement read aloud by Rep. James Lomax, Alabama speaker of the state House of Representatives Nathaniel Ledbetter (R, HD 24) called Mac McCutcheon “undoubtedly one of the most dedicated public servants I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

Former Madison County Commissioner Mike Gillespie said McCutcheon "does the job as well or better than anyone one I’ve ever seen.”

The General Election is Tuesday, November 5.
