HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A Georgia-based distributor has issued a voluntary recall of its 16-oz curly mustard product due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The greens were distributed in nine southern states, including Alabama and Tennessee.
The recall targets specific bags of Baker Farms' Curly Mustard with a best by date of Nov. 21, 2024, and a lot code of bak144-6806. The product was sent to distribution centers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
The recall was initiated after the Texas Department of State Health Services notified Baker Farms on Nov. 29 that the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious health risks.
Health officials warn that listeria can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, including young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy adults might experience short-term symptoms like fever, headache and gastrointestinal issues, the bacteria can cause severe complications such as miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
The affected product was packed Nov. 4 and distributed between Nov. 5 and 9. As of the recall announcement, no illnesses have been reported.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to:
- Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund
- Discard the product if they no longer have the receipt
- Contact Baker Farms at (844) 761-2244 with any questions
The recall is being conducted with the full knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration. Consumers can identify the recalled product by checking the UPC code 8 13098 02018 4 and the lot code bak144-6806 printed on the package.
Baker Farms representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm EST to answer consumer questions and provide further guidance.
