On the 48th Anniversary of stepping on the moon, the Rocket City is looking to make more history shortly.

City Council approved an application to be sent to the FAA, with hopes of becoming a designated landing strip for private space travel, specifically the spaceship, Dream Chaser.

Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling says, “We are ready, we have a great airport and we would love to have the Dream Chaser come to Huntsville, Alabama. Redstone Arsenal and NASA are located nearby and again, we have one of the longest runways in the entire southeastern United States. “

And if you are worried about an out of this world price tag, you might be surprised.

“Any funding that we would be put in would basically be small compared to the returns we would get. We always look at the what return on the investment would be”

As for the community, the additional income would surely thrust the region forward.

“We could be looking at as many as 400 jobs over a long term period. I think those jobs are projected to have a value of about $70,000 each, so certainly more jobs and more good things happening.”

Councilman Kling went on to say that while the city is completely onboard and feel very confident about the application, the FAA does not have an exact timeframe for an answer.
