DECATUR, Ala. — Subpoenas were requested by the Morgan County District Attorney's office on Monday for 19 witnesses named in the trial of Mac Bailey Marquette, the former Decatur officer accused of murder in the shooting death of Steve Perkins. Police Chief Todd Pinion is the first name listed, along with 13 other members of the police department.
Also included in the subpoena list is Decatur City Council member Hunter Pepper, who has gone on the record several times in his support of Marquette and the officers implicated in the September 2023 shooting of Perkins. "My stance is, we need to support the police in this matter and until wrongdoing is found or evidence is presented that shows factual wrongdoing," Pepper told FOX54 in December.
Three members of the State Bureau of Investigation - two based in Huntsville, one in Montgomery, are also named in the list.
The subpoenas request the witnesses to appear at an April 8 hearing before Judge Charles Elliott.
The requests come one week after footage purportedly of police interaction leading up to Perkins' shooting and the immediate aftermath was released by a third-party media outlet. It is not known at this time who released the footage. A temporary gag order was issued in the case shortly before the footage was made public.
Marquette and two other officers were terminated following the shooting, with a fourth officer placed on paid suspension. All four have appealed those actions and have filed to be dropped from the wrongful death suit filed by Catrela Perkins, Steve's widow.
