Alabama DHR opens applications for child care bonuses

Grant applications open April 17 through May 22, offering incentives of up to $3,000 for full-time employees.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) has opened applications for a new round of child care bonuses. Starting from April 17 and running through May 22, 2024, grant applications will be accepted.

These grants, known as Child Care Workforce Stabilization grants, help licensed child care providers. They offer a $3,000 bonus for full-time employees and $1,500 for part-time staff. These incentives aim to aid child care providers in recruiting and retaining workers in an industry with post-pandemic challenges.

“In reviewing and validating expenditures for the previous round of federal grants, we found that we had funding to issue additional grants,” said Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner. “Our goal from the beginning was to utilize all the funding we had available. Therefore, we are extremely pleased to offer another round of bonuses as child care workers continue serving their important role in Alabama.”

The eighth round of grants saw a increase for employees, with over 12,700 people receiving bonuses, marking a 26% rise compared to the first round.

Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, these grants adhere to a two-year period set by federal law, scheduled to end in September. To be eligible, providers must hold a valid license and operate in good standing with DHR at the time of application and grant reception. Furthermore, those must commit to operating for at least one year following the grant's award.
