CULLMAN, Ala. — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey joined celebrations in Cullman on Wednesday as the region welcomed the launch of the Alabama Fiber Network (AFN). The ceremony highlighted the debut of AFN’s service, marking a pivotal moment in efforts to expand broadband access statewide.
During the ceremony, Sprout Fiber Internet was announced as AFN's first customer for last-mile connectivity. AFN also introduced Terry Metze, Jr., a veteran in the broadband industry, as its new CEO. According to IMPLAN, AFN's expansion is projected to create 4,112 jobs and generate an economic impact of $657 million.
"This is a monumental day for Alabama. We are proud to officially launch our service and begin connecting communities across the state," said Terry Metze, Jr., CEO of AFN. "Increasing access throughout Alabama will enhance innovation and create new opportunities for education, healthcare, economic development and more.”
AFN plays a role in Governor Ivey's BeLinked plan, which aims to provide affordable and reliable broadband access statewide. Supported by over $200 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Treasury through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the Alabama Digital Expansion Authority, AFN plans to extend its reach to rural communities that have historically lacked reliable internet service. Once completed, the network will span over 5,000 miles across all 67 counties in Alabama.
