HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Alabama residents and visitors from out of state can enjoy a day of free fishing on Saturday, June 8. This annual event, known as Free Fishing Day, allows people to cast their lines in public waters across the state, both freshwater and saltwater, without needing to purchase a fishing license. It's part of National Fishing and Boating Week, running from June 1-9.

“Free Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has never experienced casting a line to give it a try,” said Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). “Fishing provides many mental and physical health benefits as well as access to a sustainable, healthy source of protein. It’s also a great way for families to spend time together outdoors. We encourage anyone with an interest in fishing to take advantage of this outdoor recreation opportunity.”

Although fishing licenses are waived for Free Fishing Day, those looking to get red snapper must still get a $10 Gulf Reef Fish Endorsement. More information can be found at here.

Keep in mind that Alabama's State Public Fishing Lakes require a permit on Free Fishing Day, and fishing in private ponds requires the owner's permission. Additionally, some piers may have fees and permit requirements. Those seeking new spots can explore options here.
