MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is taking proactive steps to ensure safe holiday travel during the Thanksgiving season by suspending road construction from Wednesday, Nov. 27, at noon through Sunday, Dec. 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Allison Green, the "Drive Safe Alabama" coordinator, emphasized the importance of keeping traffic moving during one of the most traveled holidays.

"We're making it easier for travelers to reach their celebrations safely," Green said.

ALDOT is urging motorists to prioritize safety with several key recommendations:

  • Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, emphasizing the critical need for a designated sober driver.
  • Always wear seatbelts, noting that over 50 percent of crash fatalities in Alabama involve unrestrained passengers.
  • Follow Alabama's hands-free law by avoiding phone use while driving, letting passengers handle calls and texts.

Travelers can plan their routes using ALGOTraffic.com or the ALGO Traffic app, which provides real-time traffic and road condition information. However, ALDOT stresses that drivers should use these tools responsibly and never interact with mobile devices while driving.

While temporary lane closures will be minimal, emergency lane closures remain possible depending on specific roadway conditions.

The department's primary goal is ensuring all Alabamians and visitors can travel safely during the holiday season.
