HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is opening two livestock shelters for those evacuating Tropical Storm Helene if they are heading north.
These shelters are to be used for livestock only, and people are not asked to bring any pets. Animals moving in response to Hurricane Helene will be exempt from a certificate of veterinary inspection.
Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, located at 1295 Coliseum Blvd will open effective immediately and will be taking in horses only. It is added to please use the Coliseum Blvd to enter the sheltering facility. Any further questions regarding the Garrett Coliseum shelter can be directed to Christi Thornton:

The second shelter can be found in Troy at the Pike County Cattleman's Association, which is located at 4100 US HWY 231 S. This location will be accepting both horses and cattle. Any questions about this shelter can be directed to Dick Barnett at 334-670-1228.
If you plan to use either of these shelters, owners are asked to bring the following items:
- Current list of all animals, including their records of feeding, vaccinations, and tests. Make sure that you have proof of ownership for all animals.
- Supplies for temporary identification of your animals, such as plastic neckbands and permanent markers to label your animals with your name, address, and telephone number.
- Handling equipment such as halters and appropriate tools for each kind of animal.
- Water, feed, and buckets. Tools and supplies needed for sanitation such as shavings.
