MOBILE, Ala. — As the world mourns the loss of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett at the age of 76 this week, it has been revealed that the artist hand-built and donated two aircraft to Mobile's USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park.
In a social media post made Sunday afternoon, the military museum shared photos of the two craft, a Grumman Goose and a Boeing Stearman, stating that Buffett made the donations just last year.
The museum said Buffett had wished to keep the donations anonymous through his lifetime.
Both planes are on display in the museum's Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion.
Visitors who walk by the exhibit can currently see a memorial wreath next to the display, along with a Hawaiian-style shirt and a printed sign which reads:
These airplanes were donated by Jimmy Buffett, a man who loved to fly.
Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs.
He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.
The last lines of the announcement are those posted to Buffett's official social media accounts announcing his passing.
It has also been revealed that the "Margaritaville" artist had been fighting Merkel cell skin cancer for the past four years.
According to an article from Flying Magazine, Buffett owned several aircraft which he piloted over the course of his career, including a Grumman Albatross, a Cessna Citation, Cessna Caravan, and a Lake Renegade named "Lady of the Waters," which was his very first plane.
