SNAP Benefits set to increase: What You Should Know

Starting Tuesday, the criteria for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be updated, incorporating various factors to determine eligibility.
The criteria will change on Tuesday and look at various factors when determining whether a person is eligible for food assistance, despite household gross income.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Starting October 1, people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, also known as food stamps, will see an increase in their monthly amounts. This change will last until September 30, 2025.

Here’s how the new monthly benefits break down by household size:

  • 1 person: $292
  • 2 people: $536
  • 3 people: $768
  • 4 people: $975
  • 5 people: $1,158
  • 6 people: $1,390
  • 7 people: $1,536
  • 8 people: $1,756
  • Each extra person adds: $220

Who Can Get SNAP?

To qualify for SNAP, your household income and assets are considered, and these rules are updated every year. As of 2023, about 42.1 million Americans, or 12.6% of the population, received SNAP each month. 

In Alabama, around 15.2% of people use SNAP benefits.
