BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Multiple people were shot Friday afternoon on Interstate 59 southbound in Birmingham, Alabama, police said.
Emergency crews were on the scene of the shooting near the 20th Street Ensley exit, Birmingham Police confirmed in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Birmingham officials have told local media outlets that four men were shot, with two of those injured in life-threatening condition. One woman is currently in police custody, officials said.
Investigators said a group of people were trying to locate a stolen vehicle and confronted the people inside the vehicle once it was located, prompting a shootout at about 4:30 p.m. Witnesses recalled seeing several people involved in the shootout running from the scene.
State troopers are assisting with the investigation.
Local FOX affiliate WBRC also reported that a traffic accident occurred in the northbound lanes while this investigation took place. ALEA is assisting with traffic relief. All southbound lanes of the roadway were closed until further notice, authorities said.
