FUQUAY-VARINA, North Carolina — Nigeria Jones (Lincoln, Neb.) has been named the BOXTOROW Women's Basketball National Player of the Week following a pair of impressive performances that helped Alabama A&M to a pair of victories that put them in second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), as announced by that organization on Monday, February 28.
Jones averaged 27.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 39.0 minutes per game while shooting .447 (21-of-47) from the field in two key victories this past week. That performance has earned her her first BOXTOROW National Player of the Week recognition and the first for the program since senior forward Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) accomplished the feat on February 9, 2021.
She would open the week at Florida A&M (2/21) where she dropped 19 points to go with five boards, three assists and a pair of steals in a 68-57 victory. Jones would be even more impressive in her next outing, that coming against archrival Alabama State (2/26).
In that one she would lead the Bulldogs back from an early deficit to claim a key 76-68 victory, scoring a career-high 35 points in the process. In addition to her 13-of-26 shooting from the field she would also add a pair of assists and a steal in 39 minutes of work and went 6-of-7 from the foul line.
Jones and the Bulldogs are back in action on Thursday, March 3 as they host Grambling at 5 p.m. at Elmore Gymnasium.
