TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban, celebrated coach who led the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football to six national titles during his 17 years with the school, is retiring, according to a press release from the school. ESPN broke the news Wednesday afternoon.
The news comes after Alabama lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl just over a week ago, eliminating them after beating Georgia in the SEC Championship and finding themselves with a record eight College Football Playoff appearances.
Before coming to the University of Alabama, he won a national championship with LSU, bringing his total national titles to 7.
The 72-year-old West Virginia native also saw stints at the following schools:
- Kent State
- Syracuse
- West Virginia
- Ohio State
- Navy
- Michigan State
- Toldeo
Saban also coached in the NFL, serving as the defensive backs coach for the Houston Oilers, the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
